The Descent

This screenplay was written in a couple of days for my group's film production for the EIFF competition that had to be done within a week. The story consisted of an amalgamation of everyone's ideas, focussing heavily on the biblical aspect of plagues and infectious diseases as it was a concept that really gripped us.

With the task of incorporating everyone's ideas into the story I spent a fair amount of time doing some library research and general reading to come up with a comprehensive screenplay that we managed to execute into a film.

The Plot

Born with a rare disease that causes everything she touches to wither and die, a high school girl lives through the challenges of having to conceal her dangerous ability, one that higher authorities believe could be hiding a cure for cancer. However, when she inadvertedly leaves her gloves behind one day she unleashes a wave of destruction in her wake and she must confront a fate that was written for her long before she was born.

Megan struggles to deal with the overwhelming concept of her existance after she inadvertedy became the cause of her mother's death. Blaming herself she coped with her grief by taking away her ability to talk, as a means of punishing herself, but we later discover is symbolic as the messenger of God. She lives her life as normal as possible with her only friend, Katie. However, when a couple of bullies corner her she looses control of her ability as hell breaks lose upon Earth. With the world now in chaos Megan must make the difficult choice she knew she'd have to make, even though it means leaving behind her only anchor to life - Katie. Confronting fate she discovers that she was sent to Earth with the plague as part of God's greater plan, who saught to wipe out what he believed was his greatest mistake - mankind, who did not listen to him. He created man to love and care not kill or hate and damage his Earth and creatures, and as such he meant to put an end to mankind and start all over again.
